JULY

July 31, 2004 on 3:11 pm | In On The Road | No Comments

July 13th (Tuesday):/ Las Vegas NV: Happy Birthday to me!!  I had a good day. I put the doggies in a really nice Kennel (more like a “resort”) so that I wouldn’t have to worry about them while I was “out & about”. I also got a room at the Wild, Wild West Casino. It’s also a truck stop, so I didn’t have to worry about my truck either. I went to dinner with a friend, had a few drinks, then went to bed.
July 14th (Wednesday):
I picked up the doggies and just relaxed. Listened to the radio (XM), cleaned the truck, etc. I did take the doggies out to the desert so they could run “off leash” for a while.
July 15th (Thursday): I picked up a load destined for Salt Lake City, UT, (421 miles) and departed Las Vegas. It was a “trade show” load, so it was light (under 5000 lbs). The route for the day was due North on I-15. The trip was uneventful.
July 16th (Friday): Delivered the “trade show” load and picked up a load to Laredo, TX (1367 miles). A good load to start off the week. The route for the day was I-15 South to US-6 East (through Price, UT) to I-70 East (through Green River, UT) to US-191 South (through Moab, UT) to US 491 [formerly US-666 before they changed it due to the “Satanic” reference. It begins in Montecello, UT goes East to Cortez, CO, then Southeast to Shiprock, NM then South to Gallup, NM where it ends], I-40 East to Albuquerque.
July 17th (Saturday): Started off the day feeling a little “achy”. By the time I got to El Paso, TX, I was feeling so bad that I decided to “T-call” (drop in transit) the load there and seek Medical attention.
July 18th (Sunday): Went to Emergency Care in El Paso. I was running a fever of 101 degrees. Turns out I had an infected in-grown toenail that was causing my problems. They prescribed some anti-biotics and Motrin for the pain. I got a motel room for 3 days to recuperate. The fever broke later that afternoon, but I stayed for the 3 days so I could get into my shoes without discomfort.
July 21st (Wednesday): Picked up a load in El Paso going to Chandler, AZ. (387 miles) The route for the day was I-10 West through Las Cruses, NM and Tucson, AZ towards Phoenix. The trip was uneventful. My foot held up well.
July 22nd (Thurdsay): Delivered the Chandler load and went to Tempe, AZ to pick up a load of Coca Cola going to Albuguerque, NM (421 miles). The route for the day was I-10 West to Phoenix then I-17 North to Flagstaff, AZ, then I-40 East to Albuquerque, NM. The trip was scenic, but uneventful.
July 23rd (Friday): Delivered the Coke load. Got a load that picks up in El Paso and delivers in Memphis, TN. Good miles for a change (263 miles empty and 1069 loaded. Total: 1332). The route was I-25 South to Las Cruses, I-10 East to El Paso. From El Paso the route was I-10 East to I-20 East to Abilene, TX. The run was normal with no problems.
July 24th Saturday): The route for today was I-20 East to I-30 East through Ft. Worth and Dallas. Then I-30 East (actually Northeast) to Little Rock, AR, then I-40 East to Memphis, TN. No problems today either.
July 26th (Monday): Delivered the load from El Paso yesterday, but there was no freight until this AM because it was a slow week-end. I just kicked back at the truck stop for the rest of yesterday. Today I got a load out of our Swift terminal here in Memphis going to Chicago Heights, IL (486 miles). The route was I-40 West to I-55 North to I-57 North through Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois into the Chicago area.
July 27th (Tuesday): Delivered the load from Memphis this AM. Went to our terminal in Gary, Indiana to fuel, then got a load from Bolingbrook, IL going to Pueblo, CO (1038 miles). The route for today was I-80 West through Davenport and Des Moines, IA and Omaha, NE to Lincoln, NE. The run was boring and uneventful.
July 28th (Wednesday): The route for today is I-80 West to I-76 West into Denver, CO then I-25 South to Pueblo, CO. I dropped the load as soon as I arrived in Pueblo (2:30 PM).
July 29th (Thursday):I sat all day today waiting for a Dispatch. About 4:00 PM , the Denver terminal messaged me to grab an empty trailer and head up there to get a load. When I went to the Dispatch window in Pueblo to ask for an empty, they said they had none. They suggested that I grab a Red-Tag (broken) trailer and take it to Denver for repair, then use that to get a load out of there. The Terminal Manager for Pueblo overheard the conversation and intervened because he could see that I was unhappy with the proposed plan. We went into his office and he called Denver and asked if they actually had a load in mind for me, or if they were just going to try to find me one after I got there. Denver said that they had no specific plan. He then started looking through the available loads for tomorrow. He asked me if I had any specific requests. I said that I had no preference, just as many miles as possible. He gave me a choice of 2 loads (as well as the option of the above stated plan). I chose a load to Billings, MT (661 miles). It was 20 miles shorter than the other choice he gave me (Idaho Falls, ID), but had a much earlier delivery time on August 1st.
July 31st (Saturday): I picked up the Billings load at about 8:00 AM. The route for the day was I-25 North through Denver and Cheyenne, WY to Casper, WY. Then I-90 West to Billings. The drive went well.
Comments: All in all, a pretty crappy month. I drove 8574 miles loaded and 636 miles empty, for a total of 9210 miles. When you consider that about 10,000 miles is my break even point (due to truck payments, fuel, taxes, permits, etc., etc., etc.), I think that I may have actually lost $$$$ this month.

THE DOGGIES’ PROFILE

July 14, 2004 on 12:52 am | In The MMM | No Comments

Wolfgang (Wolfie):

Wolfie is an Austrailian Sheepdog (Kelpie). Kelpies are “working” dogs and are intelligent and loyal. They were bred to endure the harsh climate of the “outback” where they “work”. They also make good “family” pets. They are not currently listed as an AKC (American Kennel Club) registerted breed, but the breed is recognized in other parts of the world http://www.answers.com/topic/australian-kelpie. Wolfie is Black and Tan. I recieved him as a birthday present in July of 2000. He was 6 weeks old, and barely weaned. He weighs about 45 lbs and is 20 inches tall at the shoulder. He is very gregarious, and like Will Rogers, “never met a person he didn’t like”. He is also extremely active, alert, and curious. He plays well with other dogs, and could play well with cats too if he weren’t so hyper. He doesn’t understand how intimidating he is to smaller animals because of his size.

Walter:

Walter is a “foundling”. He is also Black and Tan. He is marked remarkably similar to Wolfie (considering that they are entirely different breeds and are totally un-related). The Vet estimates his age to be close to Wolfies (judging by dental wear and over-all condition) so I just “celebrate” both birthdays sometime on Memorial Day weekend. He is some sort of Spaniel/Terrier/Whatever Jumped The Fence mix-breed. His coat is “Spanielesque”, but I try to keep it trimmed fairly short. (Less work for me). He weighs about 25 lbs and is 10 inches tall at the shoulder. I found him (or he found me) at our terminal in Salt Lake City, UT in September of 2001. He had been abandoned there, or had found his way there after being abandon somehwhere else. He was terribly frightened. I think that he had been abused by his previous owner. He eventually began to play with Wolfie, and when I went back to my truck, he followed. He jumped right in ‘like he owned the place’. The “original” plan was to get him cleaned up, get his shots, get him neutered, and find him a home. However, he bonded with Wolfie and I (and visa versa) so quickly that I soon realized he had already found his home. He plays well with other dogs, but he will not let larger dogs intimidate him. He is a pretty much a “daddys” dog, although he has become much more trusting of people as he becomes more acclimated to his ‘new life’. Cats, unfortunately, are strictly for barking at and/or chasing. He dis-likes motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller-skaters, joggers, and anything else that moves suddenly.

MY PROFILE

July 13, 2004 on 5:21 pm | In On The Road | No Comments

I am an ‘over-the-road’ truckdriver who travels with 2 adorable Canine Companions. I’m pretty much a “free spirit”. I tend not to let the “little things” bother me. I relish the solitude and independance my occupation affords me, but am not anti-social. Politically, I am a Free Thinking, Liberally Conservative Independant. I believe in “Small Unobtrusive Government”, but am not a Libertarian. I believe in the Constitution as written, not as “interpreted” by some un-elected politically activist Judges. I deplore Extremists from all sides of the “Political Spectrum”. (Does that make me an Extremist)?
I was raised in a rural environment near Bakersfield, CA with my formative years being the 1950’s and 1960’s. I was physically active, but not a “jock”. I enjoyed playing “sand lot” sports with my friends, but not “organized” sports (like on a School Team). I was an above average Baseball/Softball player (the one sport in which a guy of my diminutive size at the time could excel) and continued with this sport well into my Military career as well playing on Squadron level teams almost until my retirement at age 40. I attended Fruitvale Elementry School through 8th grade. It was a small rural school with an immense “tax base”due to industry and agriculture. It was one of the “richest” School Districts in the County at the time. Therefore, the school had good teachers (at least in my opinion). I was a ’slightly above average’ student academically. I could have done better had I applied myself. I attended Bakersfield High School (in town). It was a large school by the standards of the time (my graduating class was almost 1400 students). Here again, I did well in Physical Education, but was only a mediocre student academically. After graduation, I attended Bakersfield Junior College for 2 years but did not graduate. In my final semester, I joined the A.S.A.F. on the Delayed Enlistment Program and dropped all but 2 classes.
My 20+ year Military Career began on July 10th, 1967. I won’t bore you with every duty assignment I had, but some of note were: Edwards AFB, CA (November 1967 to March, 1969). Edwards is the closest Military Base to Bakersfield (about 85 miles), so I went home almost every weekend; Ramstein AFB, Germany (August, 1969 to July, 1971). This assignment kept me out of that ‘pesky little Police Action’ in Viet Nam; Udorn, AFB, Thailand (March, 1972 to March, 1973). By this time the “war” was ebbing so I was able to actually enjoy this assignment; Osan AFB, Korea (September, 1975 to May, 1976 and March 1779 to March 1980). I enjoyed both of my ‘tours’ here. The later tour in 1979/80 was my last overseas assignment; Hill AFB, UT (April, 1980 to April, 1984). I met my one and only ex-wife here; George AFB, CA (May 1984 to July, 1987). I ended my U.S.A.F. career here. All in all, I don’t regret making the Military a career. It brings in a (meager) stipend every month.
My driving Career began in October, 1987 with Ryder Freight Systems. I worked there until May of 1988 (Ryder phased out all of their west coast operations, and I didn’t want to move back east. They eventually went bancrupt). Yes, it’s the same Ryder as the Truck Rental company. It was just their ‘over-the-road operation that went defunct. After parting ways with Ryder, I went to work briefly for Neil’s Auto Transport. This was an unprofessional ‘fly-by-night’ company and I hated it there. I stayed only until I could secure another position elswhere, which I did with Swift Transportation in December of 1988. I have been with Swift in one capacity or another ever since. I started out with them as a Company driver. In 1993, due to some personal and medical problems, I went to work at their Repair Facility in Salt Lake City, UT from where I’m based. I worked in this capacity for 3 years, but eventually, for monetary reasons, went back to driving in 1996, again as a Company driver. In 1998, I became an Owner Operator. This affords me a little more freedom of choice. As long as I make enough to cover my payments, I am not obligated to take a load. I seldom exercise this option however. The object is, after all, to make enough $$$$$ to support my lifestyle. In October, 2002, I re-located to Las Vegas, NV (I’m still ‘based’ out of the Salt Lake City Terminal, as we have none in Vegas). Originally, this was for work-related reasons. I had secured a ‘dedicated’ run from Los Angeles, CA to Mesquite, NV and back 5 day a week. The $$$$$ was good, but the hours were arduous. Eventually, they started ‘turning’ me in Las Vegas rather than Mesquite 4 days a week. This soon began to take it’s toll financially (I was losing 150 paid miles every day or 600 per week). That was going a little too far into my wallet (about $500.00 per week gross), so in April, 2004, I went back “over-the road”. I am for now, content. I enjoy seeing the country and always being surprised about where I’ll be going next.
