Life Day 23660: Take A Chance Day

April 23, 2012 on 8:46 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning gamblers. Today is Take A Chance Day. Today may seem familiar to you. We’ve covered similar “holidays” in the past. No matter, I just go by what my sources tell me. It is a day to take a risk. Go “all in”, “draw to the inside straight”, “double down”, “let it ride”. Life is nothing but a “Crap Shoot” anyway. Today also applies to matters of the heart and business as well. If you have been reluctant to ask that “special someone” out, today is the day to take the chance. If you want that promotion at work, let your boss know.

Today is also Lover’s Day. Like Valentine’s Day, this is a day to express your feelings to the one you love. Unlike Valentine’s Day, you aren’t necessarily obligated to spend a fortune on candy, flowers, and an extravagant dinner. Today a simple “I Love You because ……..” will suffice.

Additionally, today is Talk Like Shakespeare Day. Yes, today is the Bard’s 448th birthday. To honor him, today you should try talking like him. Here are a few pointers to help you in that endeavor. 1) Instead of ‘you’ say thee or thou. Instead of ‘you all’ say ye. 2) Don’t waste time saying “it”, just use the letter “t” instead as in ‘tis, , ‘twill, I’ll do’t, etc. 3) When in doubt, add the letters ‘eth’ to the end of verbs, as I just dideth. 4) To add weight to your opinions, preface your arguments with methinks, mayhaps, in sooth, or wherefore. Have fun.

For all of you ‘mad scientists’ out there, today is World Laboratory Day. Where would the World be without those dedicated, often quirky, people who work in labs? If you know a person who works in a laboratory, or if you encounter such a person today, be sure to wish them Happy World Laboratory Day.

The food related holidays today are National Picnic Day and National Cherry Cheesecake Day. As if you need a ‘special’ day to enjoy either of these things.

Life Day 23659: Earth Day

April 22, 2012 on 9:48 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Greetings fellow Earthlings. Today is Earth Day. The concept for Earth Day was allegedly pioneered by John McConnell in 1969 at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco (where else), and the first Earth Day was held on March 21st, 1970 (the Vernal Equinox). This seems like a logical day to hold such an event. However, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (D. Wisconsin) proposed an Earth Day of his own on April 22nd. This is the one which caught on and is why today is Earth Day. Earth Day is a global event held each year to raise awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment. With that ‘new age’, hippie dippy bovine flatulence out of the way, here’s what you should do today. Venture forth into the wilderness and observe the natural wonders that Mother Nature provides. If you choose to attend an Earth Day event in your area, be prepared to listen to a bunch of wild-eyed anarchists spewing forth drivel about the evils of Capitalism and a free-market based economy, and speeches about how much better off the planet would be if only Republicans didn’t exist. You have been warned.

Today is also Girl Scout Leader Day. This day honors the thousands of volunteers who help make the Girl Scouts a success. I hope that you bought some of their sinfully delicious cookies last month to help support your local Girl Scout organization. Aaaaah, Thin Mints. My favorite.

In addition, today is “In God We Trust” Day. On this day in 1864, Congress passed an Act authorizing the use of this motto on a 2-cent coin. It later authorized the use of this motto on other coins. On July 30th, 1956, President Eisenhower signed a law passed by Congress, to make “In God We Trust” the official motto for the United States.

The food related holiday today is National Jelly Bean Day. Jelly Beans have been around since the early 1860’s. When I was growing up, they came in mostly fruit flavors and were basically red, green, yellow, orange, white or black (licorice). Today, there are hundreds of flavors and colors from which to choose. If you have a “gourmet” jelly bean store in your area such as Jelly Belly or The Jelly Bean Factory try some of their more exotic flavors today. Popcorn, spice, tropical fruit, and soft drink are but a few of the flavors offered these days. Around Christmas last year, I bought some Peppermint Jelly Beans that were delicious

Life Day 23658: Kindergarten Day

April 21, 2012 on 10:12 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning educators. Today is Kindergarten Day. But why is it called Kindergarten, and why is it celebrated today? Well, let me enlighten you. On this day in 1782, Friedrich Froebel was born in Germany. In 1837, this very same Mr. Froebel started the first Kindergarten. It was an actual garden where the children were acclimated into learning, social interaction, and school in a fun yet educational way. Today it Kindergarten has evolved into a full time program is schools.

Today is also Record Store Day. Do you even still have a turntable or record player? I do, but I’d have to dig it out of my storage shed. If you do, and are fortunate enough to still have a record store in your area, pay it a visit today.

Other holidays today are Husband Appreciation Day, Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day, and Auctioneers Day. If you have a husband, a bulldog, or an auctioneer in your family, show them some extra love today.

The food related holiday today is Chocolate-covered Cashews Day. You might have to look in a specialty confectioners store such as See’s to find them, but it will be worth the extra effort and expense. Have a few as a snack or for desert today.

Life Day 23657: Pot Day

April 20, 2012 on 4:12 pm | In Homefront | No Comments

Good afternoon my “hippie” friends. Sorry this is so late, but I have been busier than a one-legged Soccer player today. I wasn’t even going to bother with it at all, but decided I couldn’t pass up this one. Today is Pot Day (aka Weed Day, 420, 4:20, or 4/20). You can “Google” the origins for this “holiday” if you’re curious. It is really quite amusing.

I also didn’t bother looking up an actual “food related holiday” for today either. It seemed pointless since, being Pot Day, all those who celebrate it will either having “brownies” or scarfing down “junk food”.

Life Day 23656: National Hanging Out Day

April 19, 2012 on 11:23 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning to all of my friends with “hang ups”. Today is National Hanging Out Day. But what the heck is Hanging Out Day anyway? If you are on Google+, and you guessed that today is a day to start or join a “Hang Out”, you would be….. Wrong. If you guessed that today is a day congregate with your friends and just “hang out”, you would be….. Wrong. National Hanging Out Day celebrates the newest, hippest innovation in solar and wind energy technology; the lowly clothesline. You could save hundreds of dollars each year by using a clothesline instead of that energy inefficient dryer. I don’t know about you, but I miss the smell of clothes dried on a clothesline. If you don’t have a clothesline in your backyard, today would be a good day to visit your favorite home center and buy all of the materials necessary to install one.

Today is also National High Five Day. If you believe Wikipedia, prior to 1977, no one had ever raised their hand above their head and slapped another’s in a celebratory “high five” gesture. That, or no one had thought to give it a name until then. News Flash: My friends and I used this gesture in the late 1950’s, and we weren’t the originators either. The “high five” has been probably around since the dawn of time. I can picture Neanderthal Man, after killing a Wooly Mammoth to feed their clan, sitting around the campfire giving each other “high fives”. In my research, I could find no reason for today being designated as “High Five Day” other than a group of college students from the University of Virginia declaring it so in 2002. I guess that some people are just desperate for notoriety.

Today there are two days of remembrance designated. The first is Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day. The second is Holocaust Remembrance Day or Yom Hashoah. Both of these deserve at least a moment of silent reflection from you today.

If you are a business owner, today is Get To Know Your Customers Day. Really? If you own a business, especially a small business, shouldn’t everyday be “Get To Know Your Customers Day”?

The food related holidays today are National Amaretto Day and Garlic Day. If you are adventurous and creative, you could try putting a shot or two of Amaretto in your favorite tomato/garlic based spaghetti sauce. I don’t think it would kill you. However, trying to create a new ‘cordial’ based upon garlic and Amaretto might prove disappointing. But what the heck, YOLO.
