Life Day 23664: Arbor Day

April 27, 2012 on 10:06 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning tree huggers. Today is Arbor Day. Arbor Day was created and organized in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska. An estimated one million trees were planted that day. Quite a feat considering the logistics involved in coordinating such an effort without the aid of electronic media. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated in many different countries, although the dates may vary depending upon climate and optimal planting season. If your community is holding an Arbor Day event today, I urge you to attend. Also, why not visit your local nursery, buy a tree, and plant it in your yard. Surely, you have room for one more.

Today is also Babe Ruth Day. On this day in 1947, the legendary George Herman (Babe) Ruth was honored in Yankee Stadium (“the house that Ruth built”). Despite suffering from throat cancer, the “Sultan of Swat” gave an emotional speech before a capacity crowd of 58,339 where he expressed his gratitude to his fans. “The Bambino” succumbed to his illness on August 16, 1948.

Additionally, today is Morse Code Day. Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph and creator of Morse Code, was born on this day in 1791. Although there was much controversy at the time over who actually invented the telegraph, it is generally accepted as fact today the he had the most practical and cost effective system. He also had a lot of “help” in creating the Morse Code.

Other holidays today are: Tell a Story Day, Mantanza’s Mule Day, and, (if you’re a cat owner you’ll appreciate this one), Hairball Awareness Day.

And, the food related holiday today is National Prime Rib Day. After you have planted a tree, paid homage to the Babe, and cleaned up your cat’s hairball, treat yourself to a delicious Prime Rib dinner.

Life Day 23663: Audubon Day

April 26, 2012 on 12:09 pm | In Homefront | No Comments

Good afternoon bird lovers. Today is Audubon Day. On this day in 1785, John James Audubon, America’s foremost ornithological illustrator was born. His book, Birds in America contains contains 435 hand-colored plates. It was published in “elephant folio” format to accommodate the life-sized portrayals of birds upon which he insisted. It wasn’t until after his death in 1851, that a former student of his wife started the Audubon Society.

Today is also Richter Scale Day. On this day in 1900, Charles Richter was born. He created the Richter Scale in 1935. The Richter Scale measures the amount of energy an earthquake releases.
Factoid: There are over 9,000 earthquakes every day. Most are unnoticeable, but thanks to Mr. Richter, today we can at least detect them.

If you are Jewish, there is another holiday for you today. It is Yom Ha’azmaut, or Israel’s Independence Day. It celebrates Israel’s Declaration of Independence in 1948.

Other holidays today are: Hug an Australian Day, Take Your Daughter To Work Day, National Kids and Pets Day, and Poem in Your Pocket Day. Find your own unique way to celebrate these.

The food related holiday today is National Pretzel Day. How do you like your pretzels? Twisted or straight, soft or crispy, thick or thin, salted or unsalted. No matter. All that matters is that you have some of your favorite variety today.
Factoid: Pretzels date back to 610AD in France. Monks baked this strips of dough, twisted into the shape of a child’s arms folded in prayer. Add a little salt, and Viola, the pretzel industry was born

Life Day 23662: World Penguin Day

April 25, 2012 on 3:52 pm | In Homefront | No Comments

Good afternoon Penguin lovers. Sorry this is so late, but today was laundry day. Anyway, today is World Penguin Day. Please don’t confuse this with Penguin Awareness Day, which we covered in January. Since you should have already watched or re-watched both “Happy Feet” movies and caught up on Tennessee Tuxedo cartoons in your penguin celebration in January, here are a few of other ways to celebrate today. First, dress in black and white. Second, sit down with your children or grandchildren and learn about penguins. Last, learn a few penguin jokes. Here are some of my favorites.
1) Who is the penguins least favorite Pop Star? Answer: Seal.
2) Why don’t you see penguins in Great Britain? Answer: They are afraid of Wales.
3) Why don’t penguins like Rock & Roll? Answer: They only like Sole.
That’s the last one, I promise (unless there is another penguin related holiday this year).

Today is also Executive Administrative Assistants (Secretary’s Day). Secretaries are vital to any business executive. They keep track of appointments, schedule meetings, screen incoming calls and visitors so that their boss is free to do important Executivy kinds of things such as playing golf, visiting their mistress, and bribing Politicians. Seriously though, if you have a secretary, are related or married to a secretary, or just know a secretary, let them know that they are appreciated today.

Additionally, today is International Guide Dogs Day. Guide Dogs provide a vital service for the visually impaired. The entire training process takes between 3 and nine months. However, the guide dog training doesn’t even start until the dog is out of the ‘puppy stage”, usually at about 14 months of age. Puppies are entered into the program at about 8 weeks and are usually “fostered” by people who know how to do basic obedience training, and can “cull out” those who don’t have the temperament, or are lacking in some other way. As a general ‘rule of thumb’ the typical guide dog isn’t placed in his permanent home until he is around 2 years old.

If you are Jewish, today is Yom Hazikaron. Yom Hazikaron is Israel’s Memorial Day. It is a day of remembrance for those who died in their quest for establishment of their own separate Nation.

Here are a few more holidays to celebrate today. East Meets West Day,DNA Day, Hairstylists Appreciation Day, 20-Something Service Day, Malaria Awareness Day, and Hug a Plumber Day (or Plumber Appreciation Day). You are the better judge of which of these you choose to celebrate than am I.

And, last but not least, the food related holiday today is National Zucchini Bread Day. I’m not a big fan of either zucchini or bread these days, so I’ll give this one a pass.

Life Day 23661: Teach Your Children To Save Day

April 24, 2012 on 8:47 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning parents. Today is Teach Your Children To Save Day. Today you should take the time to teach your children, or grandchildren, about the importance of saving money. Depending upon their age, buy them a “piggy bank” or take them to your bank and open a savings account with them and explain the benefits of regularly saving a portion of their money. It will be a good ‘life lesson’ that hopefully they will continue as an adult. If you have the testicular fortitude, you might also try to teach your Congressperson the same ‘life lesson’. Nah, they’re hopeless. But I can dream, can’t I.

If you are of Armenian lineage, today is Genocide Remembrance Day. It is a national holiday in Armenia and is celebrated in many Armenian enclaves throughout the world. It commemorates the victims of the Armenian genocide from 1915 to 1923 when hundreds of intellectuals and community leaders were deported from the Ottoman capitol. Many of them were summarily executed.

The food related holiday is Pigs in a Blanket Day. There are as many recipes for Pigs in a Blanket as there are cooks. Everyone has their own version. The original version was simply a pancake wrapped around a breakfast sausage, then dipped in syrup. Today, a popular recipe includes hot dogs wrapped in refrigerated biscuit or crescent roll dough, then baked. However you prepare your version of this delightful treat, enjoy some today.
